Communism is an international movement. The goal is not socialism in one country (although the Bolsheviks proved this possible) it is socialism globally. However, this does not mean that communist movements must struggle for global socialism in the immediate moment.
Mao taught all future communists an important lesson. The primary contradiction is not always class struggle within one’s own nation. He transcribed this in theory when he wrote “On Contradiction”, but went further still. He proved this to be the case when he made the correct decision in allying with the KMT against the Japanese fascists.
I believe global communism finds itself in a similar predicament to the Chinese communists during their resistance against Japan. Socialism, not just in one country, but in nearly every country, cannot be brought about until the anti-imperialist struggle is won. Imperialism lessens the contradictions of capitalism within the imperial core, while exacerbating them in the periphery.
It is only through identifying and accepting this to be the primary contradiction of our time that communists can follow the proper course of action.
The primary concern of the western left should not be healthcare for Americans. This comes at great expense of the third world. While socialism in one country is indeed possible, a material analysis that ignores the broader world will never achieve that.
